Compared to paper invoices, e-Invoices may offer huge advantages for all trading partners - they are easier to process, they reach the customer faster and can be stored centrally at very low cost. At present, the mass uptake of interoperable e-Invoicing solutions in the EU is prevented by barriers such as technical complexity, legal uncertainty, and operational constraints.
The Expert Group on e-invoicing, mandated by the European Commission has finished its work and published its final report. The report calls for action in a number of areas in order to accelerate the uptake of e-Invoicing, in particular the widespread use of e-Invoicing by SMEs. Guidelines for SMEs and the organisation that support them are included in the report.
The report is now open for consultation until 26 February 2010. The European Commission welcomes contributions from Businesss support organisations and SMEs. Reactions will be taken into account by the Commission when developing its future position on e-Invoicing.
