SEPA Direct Debit

The legal infrastructure for the SEPA Direct Debit is getting into position. The SEPA Direct Debit has been launched and a number of transactions have taken place. Some reports suggest that only about 30% of banks were actually reachable by SEPA Direct Debit as at the date of launch, and that the majority of such banks were in Germany and Austria. These reports also show that in relation to the SEPA Credit Transfer, (which was launched almost 2 years ago) a very substantial number of banks are still not reachable. Looking closer at one such report, it shows that 5 banks in Ireland were reachable. It states that there are 500 credit institutions in Ireland, and on that basis, reachability is 1%. In reality, the 5 banks which are reachable are the dominant banks in the Irish market for payment accounts, and over 90% of all payment accounts in the country are so reachable.
